Happy, Healthy New Year!

I have something costly to pay for
I'm working several awesome jobs.
I don't know HOW I could be so fortunate to enjoy
such an overload of hours.

(actual reason for this post)

"Lost In Paris"
a Netflix DVD
I'll find a trailer for you . . .

It's French.  It's translated - it's easy to understand . . .
And, it IS completely "Whack-A-Doodle."

It reminds me of  Moliere.
When our educational system insisted our school study Shakespeare,
a small group of us petitioned to also learn about Moliere.

(Talk about "whack-a-doodle" . . giggle)
Well, sometimes a well placed,
extreme ridiculous, is just the thing.

Thank you for being my blogger family,

There's a school yard at the end of the street.
Sometimes you'll find a kid, heels towards the sky,
in this tire swing, attached to a magnificent tree.

This first photo was part of an ad
looking for young Irish actors to cast this story.

The Feature Film
Based on a True Story
and released this year
didn't get much box office attention
I notice the film was "crowd-funded."
I sure like that idea.
So, It's about some young people
in 1941
in Belfast during the Blitz
(Belfast was bombed twice)
These kids saved an elephant from the Belfast Zoo
Kept it safe
and returned it

At the end of the film
there are photos of the actual people
and the elephant

The movie:

a little "stressy"
but, good stories do that

I liked it.
maybe you will, too.

Doctor My Eyes . . .

Yes, these are mine -
from some photo shoot - maybe mid-eighties.

Yesterday - Super Early - I got to visit the newest part of our medical complex
(it's Beautiful!)
Keeping an appointment with the rock star ophthalmologist.
(If you need one - I recommend her, Humeyra Karacal MD,)

Anyway, My eyes - 20-20,
marvelously the same as two years ago

The Resistance Banker

The Resistance Banker - In the occupied Netherlands during World War II, banker Walraven van Hall (Barry Atsma) is asked to use his financial contacts to help the Dutch resistance.
(review from
A true WWII story.
(foreign feature film - with, subtitles)
No, I don't suggest you watch.
It's gritty, tense, stands up for what is Right
at high personal cost.

At credit roll there are photos and home movie footage of the actual people
with some extra information
and a picture of the monument created years later
when it was somewhat easier to face these difficult times.

My dad was colorful, charismatic, and expressive
or quiet.
(so, balanced - a creative-type)
On rare occasions, if we seemed to display 'gicky' symptoms,
he would say we had the epizootic.

I'm from 20th Century California.
(City of the Angeles, Mountains, Deserts,  Fertile Farm Land,
Family Farmer Pride, Truckers Code, Redwood Forests,
San Francisco, Vineyards . . . oh yeah, a place where word usage was accepted.)

I once used the word 'epizootic' in conversation
while walking a hallway
with a speech instructor
and several award winning speakers.
The reaction was stunning.

The word, evidently, is no longer in common usage
and causes immediate waves of fear based expression.

Even after calmly explaining the word and proper usage.
SO, I WON'T use the word, even though i like it.
I'll simply explain, while attending to the everyday
there has been plenty of facial sloppiness and coughing going on all around.

That being said.
I spent part of the week watching:
which is a foreign feature film
questioning life in ways I can understand
I'm almost finished
have enjoyed it
I know, I know some of you do not read films.
I sure am grateful for your company in the world.
I hope you are Super Duper Healthy.
love & love,

ps - I don't know WHY there is a type change in the center of the post.
I tried to correct - but, it didn't feel like rearranging itself.
might be my choice of words.

George Marshall & The American Century

Time for me to learn.
The first part of this documentary I kept stopping and looking things up.
(Oh, the things i do not know.)

Did you realize we have video
(moving pictures)
of the First World War?
(if we'd seen - how could we ever do it again?
I can't bare to give you a link . . sorry)

George Marshall was a truly Great Man.
He won the Nobel Peace Prize.
Imagine that.
He was inspired to develop a plan
to assist nations to rebuild
after the Second World War
Nations that were friends
and those that were enemies during the conflict.

I'm humbled.
He considered himself
to a higher cause
(my words, I'm simply/truly impressed)

Hope you can read this.
(not my photo)

Just Wanted to Share.

Thursday Night is Movie Night
I rent from Netflix
(although, i stream MOST stuff . . . for Thursday Evening, it's a DVD that arrives in a red envelope.)
This evening it was
based on a true story from 1940
I enjoyed it
(which is why I'm posting)
It was simply on the list and arrived because it became top of the list
It sure was timely.

Here's a Wiki Link, in case you would like to know more.

Some reviews were mediocre - some informative - some were good.
It's available to stream on several sites

just sayin'
I watched
and enjoyed
this film

It's the number for Barstow, California
I saw the number
and remembered having been through there many times.
(yep, my sketch)

My Grandfather,
who only spoke when he had something to say,
shared a story about his parents
and Barstow.

Just seeing the number
made me feel wealthy
with family connection.

a great guy with lots of talent
who left us rather early
He had a Barstow Story, too.

Town Center, Kirkwood, MO

George Strait - "The Chair"

Monday, July 30, 2018

2nd Best is still working out just fine . . .

I am - at this very moment -
listening to one of my favorite teachers
There's a convention in Texas
I didn't find a way to be there
Live would have been 1st Best
Present - looking around at smiling faces -
BUT, Live Stream is working out just fine.
I can see the people
and still have a mighty good seat.
(bet you can actually HEAR my grateful smile)

We went to a close park this morning.  It's cool and rainy.  A bit of relief from the summer heat we've had.  The "laughing birds" were out.  They are guinea hens . . . the sight makes us happy.  My pupster knows to stand still so they aren't frightened.  They will come really close and talk together about us.

My pupster took her last pill this morning.  I believe she's healed.
A mostly ridgeback pup got excited seeing my girl and wanted to play "Hunter and the lion"
Pretending my girl was "the lion" he tried to take her down.
ooof!  she was in a lot of pain - so, off to our 'very best friend' (aka the vet.)
My girl was better already - but was prescribed a week of anti-inflammatory precaution.
We didn't take a walk for three days for 'just in case.'
 Good and Very Good

Here's a foreign film I can recommend:
This is a trailer with the title track theme song.
Don't panic, you can enjoy the movie with subtitles.
It's worth it.
It's a storytelling of actual events.
A father trained his daughters to wrestle.
This is an odd, unheard of break from their tradition.
this also gave them a future
The film is
I see online there are plenty of choices, if you decide to view.
either way, if you are listening to the music video
I hope you are dancing.
at least in your chair.

Friday . . . (with Update)

Joke's on me.
Didn't find the "Friday People."
THANK YOU (again) Mascha for directing me to the "Friday People"
"Life Is Sweet Willy Nilly"
I've got a silly/fun project scanning some sketchbook pages to switch out art on my wall.
Here's one:
I'm looking forward to filling all the pages in this thin paper book
because then I'll give myself permission to use a book with met media.
I know, I know, it's wonky.  Seems "wonky" is a personal style.
Who Knew?
I remember riding a city bus with my grandmother in Los Angeles
seeing a building like this along the way.

We had a storm last night that soothed our heat wave at least 20 degrees.
The pupster and i took advantage of it last night
(while neighbors were cautiously taking photos of the sky.)
This morning people got the same idea . . . it was the first time EVER . . . the nature trail was CROWDED.
There's wisdom in that . . because we'll be hot beyond reason for the next few days.
Yay! for cooling storms.

One more thing.
Spike Jones fans send interesting stuff.
This was fun:

Happy Friday!

I have been reminded three times this week

(Sutro-Trees - Photo Public Domain)

Picnic moments at Point Lobos, San Francisco.
I had friends in the Coast Guard.
If you make it out to the point
You can watch Coast Guard Cutters sail out to sea.
It's humbling.
Those ships seem large in port.
Sailing away, look smaller and smaller until they seem to dip over the curve of the horizon.

When my friends would return, I'd load a day pack with small delights.
Water for the teeny bouquet of flowers resting in a china cup,
small blanket, a candle stub . . we'd stop across the street at the Zen bakery for fresh bread and cheese, then settle in a quiet, shady spot . . I'd listen to the stories of their travels, and watch the sun set over the same bit of ocean that brought them all safely home.

Most people think of Point Lobos as "The Cliff House."
Forgetting there once was the fabulous, quirky Sutro manor.  Once most of the statues and old home were removed, there was a quaint park . . . perfect for magical picnics to celebrate good friends.

Holy Ground

Just returned from the theater.

Let's Pick Up the Gauntlet.  Let's Make Kindness Valuable in the 21st Century.

(taken from the feature film, although I might have mis-worded, so - no quotes.)

Thank you,
take up the gauntlet,
to accept a challenge to fight:

example: He was always willing to take up the gauntlet for a good cause.

Today on Photo Friday

The subject is "pet"
I'm not sure my girl is actually a pet
Doesn't really matter, because she chooses to hide

D'ya hear people say they'd lose their head if it wasn't attached?

Large enough kids climb inside and look out the eyes.

Speaking of kids.
Tomorrow, with head intact
I'll be up early
ready to encourage kids to read.

It's a Good World.

Swades (finally finished viewing)

I have just begun watching.
It's long.  I'll watch a bit at a time.
Certain I'll be moved -

Have you already seen it?

First Update:  I'm maybe one third of the way through the story.
It's beautiful to my eyes,
There was a traveling song while we drove to a small village in India.
The word traveler is a variation of the Hindi word "to go"
cool . .

A young man, currently working for NASA in the United States,
misses the lady who raised him
and has taken time off to find her with the idea of returning to America with her.

Now we are in learning about village life.

I am back for just a few moments . . .
(Now i realize I should have let you know when each update was made, hm?)
We have seen lovely things, and things that seem limiting . . .
Now, we are learning a song about stars and how one alone shines brightly
but many together causes powerful, life changing good.
Now I'm off the learn from "Truth & Liberty"
never know what I'll learn

see ya later.
we'll view more of the Bollywood film, hm?

Oh. oh!  I am on a short break - (taking classes today)
I logged on to view just a little and my heart is happy . . .
There is a singing-dancing scene - demonstrating how, together we can be amazing.
Yes, it's filled with hope
Yes, it's "sugary-sweet"  in a time our populace prefers "snarky"
It reminds me of all the folk concerts of last century
where the audience sang together
at least for the duration of a few songs
That Hope

okay, I'll return to my few moments of "la-la-land love-fest"
then, I'll finish a quiz
Maybe Thursday I'll get to view a bigger chunk of this feature film
love & love.

Today is 5/27/2018
Having a few moments, i logged in to view a bit more of Swades.
I am enjoying it.
I watched a scene that caused me to think - and question -
it was a community retelling of Hindu faith
(I always wonder if we aren't talking about the same understanding.)
After the story is shared to it's happy conclusion, people are gathered around a campfire, singing songs, enjoying the moment.
Our hero intrudes their community comfort, trying to encourage them towards
towards creating a better world

oh my . . . the Quest.
what will happen?

Finally, I have watched the story all the way.
i really enjoyed it . . but, i knew i would.

Our hero extends his stay from the original two week vacation
to five weeks.
Enough to invest himself in his country of origin,
enough to help them overcome things they complained about

enough to help them question
and perhaps change
long held (limiting*) cultural practises.
he needed to return to NASA
to finish up a project
his heart continued to pull him
We had a few moments of soul searching
but, in the end our hero returned to the village
and the people
he had come to love.
*used this word because I couldn't think of a better one - may not be what the story was saying
and -
at the end there was a NASA disclaimer saying
they did not endorse the way characters were portrayed and/or treated . .

Wat Up?

Golly. I seem to be a sporadic poster.
who knew?
I'm coaching readers.
(any and all levels)
I have a semi-secret project
I explained myself the other day
saying i was "fishing for readers"
little did i realize that's exactly how it goes.

Following a required reading list
I try to tempt both reluctant and advancing students

it's great fun,
This week I've added
Doing my best not to be seen
It's hard not to see the g-r-o-w-i-n-g collection
of brand new books,
all labeled by reading level
beckoning to inquisitive minds.

Oh My
So Much Fun

Abe Books has introduced me to Norman Lewis.
He was once considered the top Travel Writer of his time.
My local library didn't offer any of his work,
Used copies of everything find their way into my hands.
Right now I'm reading

I've loaded lots in to my days lately.
Those adventures will be saved for other posts.
Perhaps a frequent flow of posts?
One could hope.

So?  With You?

Did Not Realize

This Film captured my attention . . NOT because it was a "Buzz" during award season,
Because It Is Brilliant!

It focuses on One, Specific (and rather short) Time Period
Tells the story well . . . really well.

It's rent-able on Netflix

I was "Wowed."

Thinking of TexWisGirl . . .

Can't see fences . . or birds . . without thinkin' of our friend in the cool Texas home.

I know, it's hard to see . . but, it's a piece of fencing . . .

We try a few times to capture it . . .

Directly across from the first bit - is a little more, leaning . . .

little bird enjoying a snack.

love & love,

Into the woods

Our First Fabulous Day of the Year.
Girl & Dog made it out to the woods early.
Of course, fields of grass are green.
Higher up in the tree zone, there's less direct sun to encourage growth.
Didn't stop this brave little flower.
I imagine hearing a little white flower version of "this little light of mine."

I'll need to return to see what these "umbrella people" turn themselves into.
