Park Gig

Paul Bartholomew was going through his old photos
and found this
It's a Park Gig
meaning I'm standing on a flatbed truck with a shell over it
somewhere in a huge park
you can see a sound man still pulling stuff together
the crew seemed to be running late
The park was packed, so i started on time
(this was taken in 1990)

It's good to be reminded.
I wonder what will happen next.

The Maggid of Hollywood, Paul Woolf

You know from Paul Woolf?  He's a successful screen writer, and story writer -
As a child didn't fit so good in his Brooklyn, Conservative shul -
(late 1940's - 1950's)
He questioned so much

that his Rabbi banned him from shul and he ended up studying over the phone with the Cantor.
(Blessings to every Cantor who was kind to a kid.)
Mr. Woolf said, it was okay,
studying with the Cantor
because when he (Mr. Woolf) would stop and ask what the words meant,
the Cantor would do his best to explain.
But, after Bar Mitzvah  (Oy!  What a Bar Mitzvah story it was!)
Young Mr. Woolf left to find Life on his own terms.

Eventually his heart
(or as it's said, his Jewish Soul)
called out to him.
This time, the right teachers were there . .
(turns out one of them was one of mine - Rabbi Zalman)
Here's a happy surprise . . .
Mr. Paul Woolf received s'micha - to be a Maggid
(Feb. 27th, 1994.)

"Traditionally a Maggid is not necessarily a book person,
in the way a rabbi is or should be.
When a Maggid looks at a Jewish text,
he does so with the sense of the immediacy,
the urgency of scripture.
His task is to awaken people from spiritual sleep."

Deep apologies if you received a bazillion messages - I did the transfer incorrectly the first time - I promise not to do it again

"Don't Rain On My Parade . . . "

(It's a song title -
no worries)

I slowed my "Traveling w/Leonardo"
because someone brought a video - with an electronic sounding voice over
all about Leonardo being a phony.

What's UP with that?
So, I thought about this
I didn't research it, because ultimately it does not matter
What I'm striving to do is reignite my own creative expression
(I think this might be the cover of a book for Canadian Homeschooling)
I think it's a little like Nicholas this time of year.
So much of the world celebrates the mythical idea
Both of the men lived
ideas have come to surround the idea of them
to inspire others.
(Nicholas means Victory of the people
Leonardo means lion - in case you wondered)
(this photo comes from a blog post celebrating Leonardo's garden)
I am going to travel along w/Leonardo for a while longer,
Then, move to another project i intended to start a long time ago
At the moment, it's easy to see I'm looking at a quality considered
(a desire to know - or learn)
I think i have an abundance of this quality.

Here is a photo of Leonardo's childhood home
(Looks like a tourist destination now)

Lots of people have taken photos of places they've visited
connected to Leonardo
I am grateful, it's nifty to be able to connect with bits of the story
and with the people inspired by it/him

I'm am looking to reignite the creative Lion inside of me
and YOU are invited to play, too
if a similar journey interest you.

Nicholas Day

There are many people here celebrating
St. Nicholas Day
Children put their shoes out last night
and found candy
or treats waiting for them this morning.

For several years I got to celebrate in a large event
hosted by Catholic Supply of St. Louis
Hundreds came on Nicholas Eve
People brought gifts for Nicholas
to deliver to others
We would have a pile of games, toys, socks, blankets
and cash
to give to children at the St. Nicholas School in our
inner city

Whatever you celebrate
Wherever you are
I wish for you
 Light, Joy, Hope

"Methuselah Ate What He Found on His Plate"

Methuselah ate what he found on his plate,
And never, as people do now,
Did he note the amount of the calorie count;
He ate it because it was chow.
He wasn't disturbed as at dinner he sat,
Devouring a roast or a pie,
To think it was lacking in granular fat
Or a couple of vitamins shy.
He cheerfully chewed each species of food,
Unmindful of troubles or fears
Lest his health might be hurt
By some fancy dessert;
And he lived over nine hundred years.

Today I am enjoying:

I have "quiet time" - riding the bus, train, bus to and fro on Wednesdays
I am carrying this with me today

This very moment I am home
(lunchtime for the creatures, of course)
I was watching:
But i stopped for a moment to share with you.

Couple of chores,
back on the bus, train, bus to teach
(end of our first tri-mester)

It's a Good World.

I was asked to share something about stories

Well, ONE story
Can you imagine?
ONE Story, from the lady who thinks
All of us ARE 'the story.'

I've remembered so many
BUT, i keep returning to the movie
"Raiders of the Lost Ark"
from the very beginning
to the absolute end
and every breath i took in between
I was invested
hanging on to the arm rest of my theater chair
and leaning in
it was pure adventure

I often think Life is like this
we'd feel cheated if it wasn't

you know?
true, amazing adventure
first breath to last.

hey, what do YOU think?

Just what i needed to hear today - from Yehuda:

Every decision you have made, for better or worse, has led to who you are today, a person who is wiser, stronger and more evolved than yesterday.

Don’t be ashamed of your past. Be grateful for it.

It’s what taught you and brought you to the present.

Things all around me are terrific
So much better than a year ago
it MUST be time
to let go
and realize
"All Is Well"

Traveling w/Leonardo

I'm still reading about his life.
I hope to find some inspiration.

I read that there hasn't been anyone since
that tried to accomplish so much.
It's said he was the demonstration of
trying to reach way beyond our grasp.

I think this sounds like the saying:
"Keep Both Feet On The Ground and Reach for The Stars."

what do you think?
He kept a book of questions.
Have you ever tried to write out a sheet of questions?
I mean things you might like to know?

I've begun.
It's fun, because i am always encouraging students to ask
to question - even if the answers don't seem to come right away.

So, I'm practicing Questions
Looking for inspiration along the way
while Traveling  w/Leonardo.

wait - there's more . . . .

Aren't they nifty?
Three of us are still on earth
we weren't smiling
because the promoters wanted the world to think we were older
(and, i had braces - ruins the effect, ya know)

The cutie in front
is the lead singer on this song
he was also our drummer
a super fine human being
he is STILL
an excellent Human
and STILL entirely adorable

An example of "What Goes Around - Comes Around . . "

This song returned to the United States
at the turn of the century

It was recorded in the 1900's
Then, set aside in a warehouse
eventually someone purchased everything
in the music warehouse
and started putting songs on compilation discs
selling them in Europe

Some of the music became popular
all by itself
no promotion
just people hearing and liking
Eventually the "favorite stuff"
 started showing up
via independent radio stations
everywhere - even in the USA

 when i most needed reminding
everything in Life is intended to Bless
this song found me
so did many of my friends

All those voices?

Caught Myself . . .

is it possible i'm the slowest learner on earth?
right in front of me
there's a wonderful map
all i have to do is follow it
i don't even recognize the fear

i get invitations to do what i'm supposed to be doing
i balk
it's weird.
I ask for guidance

then pretend i don't know what's going on

(bet a quarter I didn't "notice' a thing
bet an angel is cheering so loud i can't miss it anymore.)
I remembered a hospital story
it was right at the turn of the century
I started to refuse
treatment intended to save my life
the miracle-working doctor
turned around and asked me
"what are you afraid of?"
I "heard" his voice again today

again, perhaps an angel

and, suddenly realized what I'd been doing
that i was wasting time
perhaps i should return to mySelf
you learn lessons
at a much faster pace.

Truth and Love

will we be able to create a

Tuesday, November 05, 2013

From Our Friend, James Stone Goodman:

On the fourth day I began to ask for forgiveness. I sank into silence and an animal I cannot identify (it had somewhat elaborate horns) wandered by and nibbled from a loaf of bread I carried with me. I spread a piece of bread with peanut butter, Jif smooth, and the animal signaled to me in some abstract, trans-species way its approval.

Then the animal spoke. It's about forgiveness, isn't it -- the animal said.
Yes, it's about forgiveness.

Give me your burdens, the animal said, I am a load-bearing animal, I am a yoked animal, I submit to the yoke of your burdens and I carry them gladly into the Wilderness.

So I took my burdens -- my self consciousness, my separation, my isolation, my flight, fear, especially my fear -- everything that separates me from G*d and all I love the most, and I laid them on the shoulders of the animal. On the back of this beautiful yoked beast I gave up my fear, and I watched as the animal disappeared into the hills.

I lifted up my hands and said, to the trees, to the sky, to the stones, to the dirt, to the dirt especially, to the mud:

Is this the way it works?
From a distance I heard,
Yes, this is precisely the way it works.

Opportunities . . . . I'm In

I was taught that we are most valuable when helping others.
I was also told, helping others is the best way to help ourselves.

Have you found this true?

Always, in the past, I found assisting others to achieve their dreams
ended up a miracle for everyone.

Although, I have encountered an incident, doing my ultimate best, the person saying they wanted help behaved like a 'drowning man" - and went entirely out of the way to destroy everything.
I don't have a rule for that.
Do you?

I remember God gives us Blessings,
So, this destructo-action
Must have Mega Good in it.
(although lately i feel like the joke about the kid in a barn full of manure . .
so, shall we hold the "dark before dawn" thought and continue on?)

Okay, Okay - here's what i want to tell you.

I've been gifted with two opportunities to invest in someone else.

The first is a local artist
who has really lifted himself up
and given a hand to others in our community
here is his link:

The second opportunity arrived this morning.
There's a group of people making a film that entertains,
teaches and inspires.

In the past, I've just helped by doing.
This time resources were requested.
There's a funny thing about that.
In the past, my time was super  valuable,
it cost me a lot to stop and help someone else.

Now, when our economy is challenging
our resources are what's requested.

I'm thinking something stellar is about to happen for us all.

What do YOU think???

Traveling w/Leonardo

Travel - going to a different place - instead of staying where we were . . . (just sayin')
I think this is a soul adventure
Isn't Everything?

If this turns out to carry me the places i have not, yet been
That would be good, too.

I am studying Leonardo
to remember mySelf
to Practice Being
and to
Apply His ideas to Life
For now,
Traveling with Leonardo is part of my "inner map."
He was cool.

He was said to be graceful
good looking
and talented
in ways i would understand.
He was a storyteller (who knew?)

It's fine to keep company with the idea of him today
If we walked the earth at the same time, we would have been chums

Since we did not know one another simo-time
I'll think of  him as  "Master Teacher"
and walk behind, trying to locate similar Wonder in me.

love & love,

If you treat people right, they will treat you right...
ninety percent of the time.

-- Franklin D. Roosevelt

Think it's true?  Either way, the belief makes for a better life - so, I'm claiming it.

I left "work" yesterday
feeling like a winner.
"My" students have completely rallied.
They are awake and aware
and even managed a team project
with Great results.

Life Is Good.

No matter what it is we are seeking in life,
self-esteem is essential to success of any kind.

Before you can achieve something,
you need to believe in yourself and your ability to make it happen.

Traveling w/Leonardo

I am traveling along with Leonardo - I'm told most ideas I come across will become part of the quest to be more of what I am . . .

You are invited - to become yourSelf, too.

I found a quote from poetry by Sir Stephen Spender - here's my version:
lips touched with fire,  tell of the spirit clothed head to foot in song . . .

This sounds a little like me - so, I'm going to embrace these ideas -
* remember * develop * apply *
them to my life.

Here's a Leonardo Quote (in English - i am not prepared to learn Italian . . . )
"I wish to work miracles . . . "
--Leonardo Da Vinci
