Hot Shot-itis (part 2)

As you can imagine
this event
(arguing over who was or wasn't holy and
people being swallowed by the earth)
This stuff is stressful.

The people got upset.
Many of them yelled at Moses,
saying it was all his fault.

They got themselves all worked up
and it made them sick.

The Holy One sent Aaron
(you remember Aaron?
He's the 'Big Brother.')
Anyway, Aaron was sent out
with some great smelling incense
to stand in the middle of the people.

It says he stood between the living and the dead.
this cured the people of a plague that had broken out.

after that
the Holy One asked each family group to get a walking stick
and write their names on them.

There were twelve big family groups,
so there were twelve cool looking staves
decorated with the names of each person in the family.

Then, the twelve staves
(big walking sticks)
were gathered
and taken into the Tent of Holiness
to make it "official"
(to kinda show off all this coolness)

 Aaron's staff
(walking stick)
started to bloom
it got leaves
and flowers
and almonds
It was Beautiful to Look At.

After all this
the Holy One
began to teach them
how to dedicate themselves
to serving others

Aaron and his family members weren't allowed to own much
they spent all their time
learning about holiness
and helping others
and the rest of the assembly did their best
to follow what the Holy One had told them
they fed
and provided
for Aaron and his family

looking after everyone

while the people of the One
started to grow up

Hot Shot-itis

Korach rallied his chums and formed a gang.
he made himself the leader
and they all became convinced that Korach
was the best gang leader of all
that the "Korach Holiness gang"
was the ultimate.

One day, Korach, backed by "his people"
went to have a showdown.

He walked right up to Moses,
right in front of everyone
and asked,
"what makes you think you're so holy?
You aren't the boss of us."
Moses was pretty embarrassed.
He didn't want the job of
guiding all these folks across the wilderness.
It wasn't his 'Dream job"
and it sure wasn't easy.
People say his face looked like a stormy day.
When he calmed himself, Moses asked Korach
if he though it was easy
being responsible for all these people,
trying to guide them to holiness
trying to guide them to freedom
trying to give them
their own possibilities.

(If you read the book of adventures
you'll see, it wasn't a joyride.)

Well, Korach started name calling
being kinda ugly in front of the entire assembly
so, they decided to agree to disagree
and let the Holy One decide.

The next morning
Korach and all his gang members
lit incense
and started claiming to be the true and only
"Way to Holiness."

The Holy One
told every one who would listen
to "Step Back"
they weren't to have anything to do with this new gang,
they were to move away,
move their tents back
and, before getting out of the way,
if they had anything belonging to the Korach Crew
make sure to return in

Everyone listening to the Holy One
did exactly as they were told.

What a good thing, too
because there was a mighty rumbling
the earth split
and the entire camp
of Korach and Friends
were swallowed by the earth.

More Later.

Normal is not something to aspire to, it's something to get away from.
           -- Jodie Foster

I'm pretty sure I've shared with you before
one of my favorite prayers
which comes from the musical
"The Fantasticks"

"Dear Lord, don't let me be 'normal.'"

I equally disfavor the idea of "perfection"
after all -
wouldn't that be too limiting?

The thought manifests as the word;
The word manifests as the deed;
The deed develops into habit;
And habit hardens into character;
So watch the thought and its ways with care,
And let it spring from love
Born out of concern for all beings…
As the shadow follows the body,
As we think, so we become.

I woke up this morning
thinking about
Florence Scovel Shinn.
Her books were companions for me
off and on for years.
I suddenly needed to find my newer version.
I've got a volume of her writings.

I think it's time to pull her out
for a leisurely review.

Here's a link to the Wikipedia page dedicated to her.

It's a beautiful day here.
I'd like to stroll "The Gardens"
but, it's best i stay home.

Ya know?  Sharing terrific things with you,
considering an ongoing stroll of good thoughts & ideas
knowing the garden will be there next week

I'm happy.

How about you?

Every Service i attend I think "This is the Best Ever, I'll remember this day always."
The next service i attend, I think the same thing, for different reasons.
I wish I'd get the knack of this for everything in my life.
okay, okay - I'll just keep working on it.

I read a story today - that I've seen several time before.
I suspect you've seen it, too.
It was a good reminder.
I don't remember it word for word.

It was about a successful young executive who went riding around in his bright red Jaguar.
he was going a bit over the speed limit, but he was mindful in the neighborhoods to watch for kids darting out between parked cars.

But, a brick came flying, seemingly out of nowhere -
bashing the passenger door and leaving a sizable dent.

The executive rapidly put the car into reverse and found the culprit.
Jumping out of his car he grabbed the youngster and started to holler.
"Did you see that dent?  It's gonna cost a lot of money to fix my car!!!

The boy was crying,  "It was the only way i could think to stop your car.
My brother fell out of his wheel chair and he's too heavy.
i can't lift him back in.  Please, I need your help."

The executive immediately went to lift the brother back into his chair.
Tears streamed down his eyes for miles and he determined to leave his car in disrepair to remind him.

I'm hoping it doesn't take a brick to get my attention.

hey, thank you for stopping by.
It's good to have your company along this journey.

The wisest men follow their own direction.

The conventional view serves to protect us from the painful job of thinking.

I have been listening to a lecture series
"Between Cross and Crescent:
Jewish Civilization from Mohammed to Spinoza"
Professor David B. Rudderman

This is the second course I've taken from this teacher.
It's so full of information
so much for me to consider
so many answers to stuff i just couldn't comprehend
while i was a student in Brooklyn

Here's something i can't get through my noggin
My mother used to loose stuff
her car keys, her sunglasses

I know a guy who forgets about things
i would have thought
doesn't seem to worry him a bit

So, why or how
has mankind held on to limited
destructive ideas
for hundreds of years?

oooh, i got a lot of learnin' to do.

I'm sending you love,
I'm thanking you in advance for your comments
and, especially for your company on this journey

The architect should strive continually to simplify; the ensemble of the rooms should then be carefully considered that comfort and utility may go hand in hand with beauty.
            -- Frank Lloyd Wright, 1908

I'm thinking this is good advise for those of us
in mindful creation of a good life.
In consideration, it appeals to me,
this idea of simplicity,
offering a useful life,
a life that makes a difference.
What do you think?

Broadway Bean

I haven't been to visit my friends Larry & Vesna in almost a year.
Oh how i have missed them.
Oh what fun we had every week.
When Fall came around i had classes on Tuesday
I'm on summer break
I took a new bus route to Carondelet
the streets have been redesigned and everything looks beautiful
I didn't call before going
so it was a surprise when i came through the door
singing a story time song

The place is every more inviting than before
(which is hard to imagine)
This is the place
I told you about
that it would be worth it to fly from Brazil
just for the latte

if you have the time,
Do yourself a favor
and visit my friends

You may return home with some breath taking art
if not
You'll return home with happy feelings
and new friends

James Stone Goodman:

The Repair

 O dear pious ones –

When you open your mouth
Whose voice do you hear?
Who speaks through you?

Be a maggid
Be a poet
Be mantic

Be a vessel
Be a Torah
Be quiet

Be oracular
Be vatic
Be sybilline

A maggid
A mishnah a neshamah
An anagram for the soul

Be nothing
Be nothing
An empty vessel for G*d.

– R. Yosef Caro HaMeChaber

Today from Yehuda Berg:

There is something special in the air today
inspiring you to become something beyond yourself,
beyond your understanding,
beyond any limitation.
Ask now that your soul transform
in a way that the person you are today
can’t even fathom the person
you are going to become tomorrow.
