One of my old favorites

I'm writing a talk - based on Joy - I'm surprised at some of the sayings that come to mind - This one was a basic premise when I first started serious study - - Imagine!!!! "Serious Study about Joy." perhaps I am "Seriously Joyful?"

Think Big

I like to remember Quincy Jones saying he always leaves room for God.
I like thinking about making plans so big God will have to step in to help.

here's a saying that reminds me again:

Bite off more than you can chew, then chew it. Plan more than you can do, then do it.

Hope

My study-buddy, Jim Brule, was ordained on the most "magical" evening of all.
The night of Martin Luther King Day, the Eve of Inauguration Day.
He is now officially:

Maggid Jim Brule

You would think that would be all the good one week could hold.
I told you, though - it was the Eve of the rebirth of HOPE in America.
I got to head home on Tuesday.
It turned out I got to see the events unfold in Washington D.C.
Live, on a big screen at La Guardia airport.
I was with, maybe eight other people, at the end of a long corridor.
(In my case i was early for a flight.)
The network news would also show us Times Square, which was packed,
shoulder to shoulder, with folk celebrating together.
Something beautiful (and uncommon) happened in the airport.
Our little crowd joined and became one -with the holy crowd of hopeful people.
We stood when it was time to stand. We raised our voice in song.
WE whooped and cheered and hugged each other with tears in our eyes.

A moment.
One moment of connection.
Not History - although the day has been recorded, will be remembered,
but - it was a taste of the Truth of Us
a Taste of One
a moment of Joy deeply shared

Maggid Jim, on this wave of wonder you return to your "regular life"
But, you are New
and - your Life is dedicated to Something More
Something Amazing
From now on, when you face "others"
You shall be the mirror of the Possible
of the Probable
and, you will
be a mirror of Love and Hope
Inviting people Home.

Awesome

Wondering why people MUST try to push one another around.

Art suffers the moment other people start paying for it. The more you need the money, the more people will tell you what to do. The less control you will have. The more bullshit you will have to swallow. The less joy it will bring. Know this and plan accordingly.

Happiness arises in a state of peace, not of tumult.

Still, we continue to choose a happy heart
and we will see how far we can go.

Wisdom Keeper? Inspiration Sharer?

Our congregation invited Rabbi Rami Shapiro to spend the weekend. It was our "Spiritual Enrichment Weekend" and he was our "Scholar in Residence." I got to attend a little more than half of the time.

I suppose my favorite part is, that it was a perfect match for our congregation. I'm beginning to think we are unique. Who knew???? I should have guessed, if I'm comfortable, feel at home, then this place MUST be special. Rabbi Rami continued to say, "I've visited with your Rabbis and I wonder, 'why am I here?'" I guess because with us, he found people in agreement, instead of a good, argumentative conversation, hm??

Carol, I know you'll like this. Because I came away knowing I'm in my right place, that I'm growing into mySelf. That, in challenges, I have terrific company AND - if I EVER grow up - I want to be Just Like MySelf.

(yeah, I knew you'd like that . . . )

If you didn't get to spend time with us this weekend, you can read his books, or watch for other opportunities to see him present (he isn't ordinary - nope - not at all) - Or, you could read his blogs. You could google him and find interesting stuff . . .

Well, I'm off to print lyrics - in the morning I sing two services where they post lyrics on the "Big Screen." That's fun. Instead of hiding their beautiful faces behind a bulletin, or a book - looking down and singing into a page - I can see sparkling eyes - hear clear voices -

I can get a good look at the Face of God.

There are so many who would try to jam you into their mold - yet, i agree with this:

Trust yourself. Think for yourself. Act for yourself. Speak for yourself.
Be yourself. Imitation is suicide.

Friends

So, I have a lot to tell you.
And, I will get back soon to share.
Because Rabbi Rami Shapiro is coming to visit -
and we are all excited and looking forward to this.
But, right now I just want to tell you that, on my way to service last night,
I missed a bus.
So, of course, I got to wait for the next one.
And several people stopped to talk and pass the time.
(That was nice)
Then, the next bus arrived
(Number 1 - Goldline, Central West End - just in case you wondered) -
and, a friend of mine was riding.
Then, of course, I no longer thought I missed a bus,
i thought I was on the exact right one.
And we talked all the way and the ride seemed really short.
When we arrived, we were a little early and he said,
"There's mint growing by that big rock in the garden."
I thought I must have heard him incorrectly
because we were talking about his thesis paper and things of Faith.
But, nope, I was correct, because, when he repeated for me
he was still talking about mint,
actually, about a mint plant.
So, we went to see.
We got out back, where the garden is,
except it's winter and everything looks barren.
Then he says, "Oh!,The leaves are all dry"
and he walks over to these scrubby, stick looking plants and runs his hands over the top.
Then he rubbed his hands together and lifted them up for me to sniff . . . .
MINT!!!!
Here, on a dark winter night - Mint!
Then, he pointed to where we (our congregation) have a pumpkin patch.
He shared that his mother used to have a pumpkin patch.
His smile was the best gift of all -
here, this city girl, this head in the clouds, artist/music lady
was given the gift of friendship and sharing
on a Friday Night,
right before we entered our Sukkat Shalom
(Shelter of Peace)
to enjoy the Holy Presence.

Ooooh, this is beautiful:

Some people, no matter how old they get,
never lose their beauty—they merely move it from their faces
into their hearts.
