Yesterday

I took the "good weather route" home on the bus yesterday.

i planned the trip so there was plenty of time to stop in a place

I have been noticing since i acquired this new position

(and therefore the opportunity to spend much more transit time every day -

passing places i never knew existed.)

This place is filled with motorcycles -

it is surrounded by a huge iron fence that is locked in the evening -

but open during the day AND there is a sign -

A BIG SIGN out front that suggests there is coffee inside.

There's my excuse - a place that reminds me of my heart

and an opportunity to find a special cuppa along the way.

So, in I go.

yep - BIKES EVERYWHERE -

especially now that it's winter.

There's a couple of couches and a guitar leaning across one of the sofa backs,

inviting those who will to play a tune . . .

A young man with a welcoming smile behind a small espresso bar . .

what an unusual (and wonderful) sight -

AND

The smell of fresh roasted . . . .

so, I acclimate myself, with a little help from the barrista -

I go for a favorite

"Cafe Latte"

(plain, no flavors added, although I do have the choice of -

well, he started to rattle off a lot of flavors but i stopped him -

because I prefer a 'regular' latte.)

Some ladies with dogs arrived, and recognized me from who knows where -

I got my latte and went outside to drink and wait for my bus . . .

I HAD to go back to the picture window to wave a the gentleman who made my

MOST EXCELLENT LATTE . .

he noticed me & smiled . .

the two ladies were seated on the bar stools inside, I gather the barrista was busy . . .

(there were only three stools there . .

two medium large dogs, two ladies,

one gentleman cleaning the bar . .

and a bazillion bikes . . .

I enjoyed it so much.

I crunkled the empty "go cup" into my carry bag

so i could get a photo to share it with you . . .

FINALLY!

I have been reading this

off and on

for several months.

It was mentioned in a class I was taking.

The teachers stressed it was NOT required reading, it just had a point they were trying to make

and, in the process this title came up.

Golly, i have enjoyed it.

There are points where it's good to just put it down for awhile,

which is handy because I have so much I need to read . .

and

letting the information "soak"

was good.

It discusses so many of the things I've studied

and heard about

and wondered.

I enjoyed it

although some of it was VERY HARD

Painful, even

But, important to know, i suppose.

A lady saw me with this book a week or so ago

(since i tend to carry it for reading on the Metro)

She was amazed because it's such a

"Last century"

read.

(giggle - how fun,

I often refer to "last century"

so, it made me smile.)

Anyway, I'm on to

only heaven knows what

next.

it will have a different cover,

the book I'm carrying.

I'm never settled about these things, I mean the "occult," or hidden arts. People i love dearly looked into these paths and eventually traveled another direction. In the Arts we see these practises brought out, sometimes beautifully, sometimes not so much. AND, i can't count the friends I have who actively practise or make their living with these tools.

Still, I watch and appreciate what has been handed to us by the ones who have gone before - and i simply adore the ones today who offer hope, love and possibility with the ancient wisdom . . heck, isn't this exactly what i try to do with my education?

I'd enjoy hearing your ideas about all these things.

What stared this post today was a report about Mercury and Mars "squaring off 'against' each other." Perhaps the first day of the year might offer a bit of challenging "truth telling (from differing perspectives.)" I only vaguely understand about this . . BUT, the report offered advice I REALLY LIKE - SO - all the preface in this post was only to share this:

Oh my fur & whiskers! For weeks now we have been getting my office ready. It's going to be comfortable. There's lots to do, and a long tradition to guide me. I've got assistance from all over the region, and a master teacher supporting me in the background. So, like many things, as long as i "suit up and show up" the Holy One will take care of the rest. I still feel a little like "Where's Waldo." That, of course comes from the balancing act of fulfilling previous commitments and moving into this new adventure. This is one of those times I've got that inside assurance.

This morning i was singing for a service to say good-bye to a ministerial dream team that had been here, in the church i was originally sent here to serve, for four years. They have a new post in Vancouver. The people in Canada are already so excited . . .

My new post begins Tuesday. I wish my Pops were here. I've got him in my heart, he helped every step of the way and I'm pretty sure he'd be cheering now.

So, here we go, a maggid is about to pastor a congregation in a colorful, diverse neighborhood . . . super surprising . . and all good.

Most of you know I'm a Metro-Rider.

(I ride public transit.

Okay, okay I admit I'm trying to decide if I want a car again -

or i want to move closer in to all the things i do -

BUT, that's a story - and a decision -- for another time.)

Thing is, i walk to the bus stop.

This time of year, in the mornings.

I see the school crossing guard.

He was told to stand on the South East Corner this year.

For years he was expected to stand on the South West Corner of the intersection

because that's where most of the children are, needing to cross the busy street

to get safely to school.

Now, he walks out into the street for me

alerting traffic to stop . . .

hey, that's nifty.

Of course,

this crossing guard serves less children

because they come from the other direction on their way to the school

which is a few blocks further down the street.

The Guard was told to stand on this

new & improved side

Because he was stopping

("inconveniencing" - my word - not his)

drivers.

The drivers felt it was unfair because they ALSO had to stop with the light

in front of the school.

In the line at the store, the cashier told an older woman that she should bring her own grocery bags because plastic bags weren't good for the environment.

The woman apologized to him and explained, "We didn't have the green thing back in my day."

The clerk responded, "That's our problem today. Your generation did not care enough to save our environment."

He was right -- our generation didn't have the green thing in its day.

Back then, we returned milk bottles, soda bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. So they really were recycled.

But we didn't have the green thing back in our day.

We walked up stairs, because we didn't have an escalator in every store and office building. We walked to the grocery store and didn't climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time we had to go two blocks.

But he was right. We didn't have the green thing in our day.

Back then, we washed the baby's diapers because we didn't have the throw-away kind. We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy gobbling machine burning up 220 volts -- wind and solar power really did dry the clothes. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing. But that clerk was right; we didn't have the green thing back in our day.

Back then, we had one TV, or radio, in the house -- not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief (remember them?), not a screen the size of the state of Montana .

In the kitchen, we blended and stirred by hand because we didn't have electric machines to do everything for us.

When we packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, we used a wadded up old newspaper to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap.

Back then, we didn't fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. We used a push mower that ran on human power. We exercised by working so we didn't need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity.

But he's right; we didn't have the green thing back then.

We drank from a fountain when we were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time we had a drink of water.

We refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and we replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull.

But we didn't have the green thing back then.

Back then, people took the streetcar or a bus and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour taxi service.

We had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And we didn't need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest pizza joint.

But isn't it sad the current generation laments how wasteful we old folks were just because we didn't have the green thing back then?

Bicycle

I stopped by the library to return the books I borrowed. My favorite branch is downtown. That place is HUGE. It's also being remodeled so, I went to my second favorite, which is on my way to many of the places i go, is nice, friendly, easy to get around, and besides, if i really want to borrow something in the system it will be sent to any library I choose. Pretty good deal, don't ya think?

I needed to talk to a librarian because one of the books i borrowed is really old. I was entirley grateful to have had it on extended loan. Someone before me (at least twelve years ago, because that's the last time anyone requested this book) had highlighted parts in pink. I wanted to make sure i wasn't accused, since library privileges are precious to me.

I have a back log of books at home to read but, since i was there I thought I'd find something "just for fun.'

Our last library newsletter "Check It Out," had a list of travel books that appealed to me. None of them are currently available, BUT they came from section 910.2 so, i went to peruse the shelf and returned with:

I've only just begun - (Really! last time i looked i was only on page 27) - But, it reminded me of some really fun times when i was a kid. So, okay, okay, the author quit a job that was driving her bonks and decided to ride a bicycle across Spain. Already in the country, with her bike, she takes a practice ride and discovers it is REALLY HARD. (picture me laughing as i ride home on the bus.)

Once, a very long time ago, a friend decided she wanted to ride from Las Vegas, Nevada - (where we lived, ) to California and pedal along the Pacific Coast (which is beautiful.)

We each purchased a Motobecane Bicycle and started riding most places around town.

You have to picture two - very ROUND young ladies - on fancy bikes - pedaling through the streets of Las Vegas - land of card dealers, food servers, musicians, all wearing the professional black & while of the work force - land of statuesque show girls and tourists in bikinis, land of slot machines in super markets . . . yep - two little fat girls pretending we could pedal across two states. My dad laughed so hard he cried. He offered to give us a ride back if he could have the rights to film the adventure from Las Vegas to Pahrump (just a few miles outside Las Vegas.)

My brother claimed the bike and gave it to his lady friend - who promptly destroyed it. I was heartbroken at the time but, now i think i might not have survived to type this today - or to finish the book i checked out which, I believe is gonna be a terrific read.

I read a story today - that I've seen several time before.

I suspect you've seen it, too.

It was a good reminder.

I don't remember it word for word.

It was about a successful young executive who went riding around in his bright red Jaguar.

he was going a bit over the speed limit, but he was mindful in the neighborhoods to watch for kids darting out between parked cars.

But, a brick came flying, seemingly out of nowhere -

bashing the passenger door and leaving a sizable dent.

The executive rapidly put the car into reverse and found the culprit.

Jumping out of his car he grabbed the youngster and started to holler.

"Did you see that dent? It's gonna cost a lot of money to fix my car!!!

The boy was crying, "It was the only way i could think to stop your car.

My brother fell out of his wheel chair and he's too heavy.

i can't lift him back in. Please, I need your help."

The executive immediately went to lift the brother back into his chair.

Tears streamed down his eyes for miles and he determined to leave his car in disrepair to remind him.

I'm hoping it doesn't take a brick to get my attention.
